Kids at First, Free Breakfast and Childcare

Kids at First is a free breakfast and childcare program provided for school-age children on late start Mondays.

  • Kids at first opens at 7:00 a.m. in the lower level of First United Methodist Church, 1036 7th St., Nevada, IA.
  • Parents must walk their child into the church for check-in rather than just dropping them off.
  • Breakfast is served from 7:30 until 8:30.
  • Pre-registration is not required but is encouraged.  See attached files for registration form.
  • Indoor activities include books, games, puzzles, craft-making, coloring, drawing, and others, all in a supervised and safe environment.  If weather permits we try to get outside for about 30 optional minutes of fresh air activities.
  • At 9:00 we clean up, get our school bags, and some of our volunteers walk the group to Central Elementary.  Older students may wait for the shuttle buses to the middle school, or may walk to the middle school if we have parent permission for them to do so.
  • Our helpers are all volunteers from the local community and have completed background security checks for the safety of your child.  We also have some high school volunteers through Key Club.

Forms are available in both English and Spanish at the Nevada Public Library, Community Cupboard, Harmony Clothing Closet, First United Methodist Church office, or at the Central Elementary office.
